Overview

Mount Kenya is a colossal, ancient volcano bursting with wild, untamed beauty. If you are looking for an unforgettable, action-packed adventure, the 17-kilometer Chogoria route day hike is your ultimate ticket. This epic 6 to 8-hour loop takes you straight into the absolute heart of Mount Kenya National Park. We are talking about a curated, high-energy journey that perfectly showcases the breathtakingly pristine Lake Ellis, the thundering cascade of Nithi Falls, and the deeply historical Mau Mau Caves.

Starting at a robust high-altitude baseline of 2,950 meters at the park gate and peaking at roughly 3,455 meters on the lake’s shores, you will conquer a 505-meter elevation gain while traversing some of the most spectacular, dramatically shifting ecological zones anywhere on the African continent.

The Journey Begins

Your epic day starts with a game drive from KFS Gate through the Mt. Kenya Forest, where you may get to see elephants, buffalos, the elusive leopards and sometimes even lions that somehow manage to get into the park. This drive takes use through the misty tropical forest, setting an adventurous tone right out of the gate to our destination, the KWS Chogoria Gate, our hiking starting line, located right next to the scenic Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas.

>Stepping out of the vehicle, the crisp, thin alpine air immediately fills your lungs. The transition zone here is dominated by magical Hagenia trees (East African rosewood) draped in heavy, atmospheric mosses, making you feel like you are walking directly through a fantasy world

Stepping into the Light

After about an hour of moderate, steady trekking, the thick forest canopy suddenly shatters, opening up to an endless, rolling expanse of golden tussock grass and thickets of giant heather. Welcome to the majestic Afro-alpine moorland! You will trek past icy, crystal-clear alpine streams and the quiet remnants of a colonial-era fisheries station where trout were introduced in the mid-20th century.

Along the trail, you will the famous Mugi Hill standing at 3,540 metres, as well the Giant’s Billiard Table, a massive, perfectly flat-topped volcanic rock formation entirely surrounded by sheer 400-foot lava cliffs, standing in stark geometric contrast to the rolling, organic hills. This is the point to ask your guide to show you the wreck of a crashed plane up a hill, some landmark many never spot.

Chilling at Lake Ellis

Past Mugi Hill, you reach the main objective and the absolute crown jewel of your ascent: Lake Ellis. Sitting perfectly at an elevation of roughly 3,455 meters, this pristine, 28-acre glacial tarn is quite literally a sparkling oasis in the sky. Carved by the slow grind of ancient Pleistocene glaciers millions of years ago, the lake’s incredibly clear waters act as a giant mirror, perfectly reflecting the golden moorlands and the towering peaks on a clear, still morning.

Far away from the heavily trafficked commercial routes on the western side of the mountain, Lake Ellis offers a profound, untouched sense of wild isolation. Here, surrounded by bizarre, towering giant lobelia plants, which are frequently visited by the iridescent Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird and actually produce their own biological antifreeze to survive the freezing nights, you will drop your pack, rest your legs, and enjoy one of the most scenic and rewarding trail lunches on earth.

The Mau Mau caves

Descending from Lake Ellis, will take an incredible step back in time by making a stop at the Mau Mau Caves. Tucked away in deeply concealed, highly defensible rock shelters near the tributaries of the Nithi River, these naturally occurring caves served as vital, secret hideouts for Kenyan freedom fighters during the fierce 1950s independence struggle. Standing in the quiet, solemn atmosphere of these subterranean refuges provides a profound, emotional connection to the nation’s resilient history before you push further up the mountain.

Plunging into Nithi Gorge

The excitement is far from over! Instead of just retracing your steps, the descent trail plunges steeply down into the dramatic lower Gorges Valley. The terrain here gets rough and requiring careful footwork, but the payoff is monumental. Hidden away in a claustrophobic, intensely forested ravine is Nithi Falls. Here, the icy alpine river plummets over a sheer cliff face, creating a spectacular 150-meter cascade that finishes with a thundering, uninterrupted 30-meter freefall directly into a freezing plunge pool. The raw, deafening power of the waterfall and the atomized mist chilling the air make this a totally exhilarating, sensory overload experience.

Coming Home

Climbing back out of the deep Nithi gorge, the final leg of your journey will take a detour to join back with our original track completing a loop. Eventually, the open, windy moors give way once more to the protective canopy of the Hagenia, leading you safely back to the KWS Chogoria Gate for your ride back to civilization.

Don’t let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pass you by. Book your epic adventure with Hike Central Nyeri today and experience the ultimate fusion of natural splendor, physical exhilaration, and personal growth. Let our expert guides lead you on a journey that will forever etch itself into the fabric of your soul.

FAQ

What to Bring

Essentials:

  • National ID or Passport: A valid national ID or passport is required for entry into Mount Kenya National Park. Make sure it's readily accessible in your daypack for park rangers to check upon arrival.
  • Quick-dry clothing: Opt for moisture-wicking shirts, pants, and shorts that will dry quickly if you get caught in a sudden shower or sweat heavily during the hike. This will keep you comfortable and prevent chills, especially on the way back down. e.g. football jersey, cargo pants, polyester clothes
  • Hiking boots: Sturdy, waterproof boots with good ankle support are crucial for navigating the sometimes muddy and uneven terrain.
  • Daypack: A comfortable backpack, ideally around 20-30 liters, will carry your essentials while leaving your hands free.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the hike with at least 2 liters of water. Consider a water bottle to minimize plastic waste. Single use plastic containers are prohibited in the park.
  • Snacks and lunch: Pack enough energy-boosting snacks like nuts, granola bars, and fruits, along with a filling lunch to replenish your reserves.
  • Rain gear: The weather on Mt. Kenya can be unpredictable, so pack a rain jacket and pants to be prepared for sudden showers.

Sun protection:

  • Sunscreen: Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen generously to exposed skin, reapplying every 2 hours, especially after sweating or swimming.
  • Sunglasses: A good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting off the water and foliage.
  • Hat: A wide-brimmed hat will shield your face and neck from the sun's rays.

Comfort and convenience:

  • Hiking poles: These can provide extra stability and support on the sometimes steep sections of the trail.
  • First-aid kit: The guide will be equipped with a first aid kit. Reach out to him/her when you need assistance.
  • Insect repellent: Apply insect repellent to keep pesky mosquitoes and other bugs at bay.
  • Camera: Capture the breathtaking beauty of Lake Ellis, Nithi Falls and the surrounding scenery with a camera or phone. Professional photography will also be available.
  • Cash: While not always necessary, carrying some cash can be handy for buying snacks or drinks from local vendors near the park entrance.

Optional items:

  • Dry bag: Protect your valuables like your phone and camera from getting wet with a dry bag.
  • Binoculars: Get a closer look at the diverse birdlife and other wildlife in the area with a pair of binoculars.
  • Change of clothes: A extra set of clothes to change into after the hike (sometimes, the good hiking gear also fails, and unexpected rain may drench you).

How to Prepare for this Hike

Preparation:

    • Distance and Difficulty: The hike is approximately 9.5km one way, with moderate difficulty due to uneven terrain and some steep sections. The total hiking distance is 19km.

    • Stretch and Warm Up: Before setting off, perform some light stretches and warm-up exercises to prevent injuries.

    • Check the Weather: The weather on Mount Kenya can be unpredictable. Check the weather forecast before your hike and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.
