Imagine this:
You are standing at 4,985 metres (16,355 feet). The air is crisp enough to snap, and the silence is absolute—until the sun cracks the horizon. Suddenly, the sky catches fire. Gold, crimson, and violet spill across the heavens, illuminating a world of jagged peaks and glaciers that glitter like diamonds scattered by giants.
This is Point Lenana. This is the crown jewel of Mount Kenya. And you? You look spectacular standing on top of it.
Hike Central Kenya invites you to trade the city noise for the cloud line on our exclusive 2-Day Traverse Expedition. This is a transformational journey through the heart of an ancient volcano. It is a challenge, a reset button for your soul, and arguably the best weekend of your life.
Here is how we take you from “couch” to “conqueror.”
Day 1: Into the Valley of Giants
Route: Sirimon Gate > Old Moses > Shipton Camp
We kick off at Sirimon Gate, where the air is fresh and filled with the scent of adventure. After a quick shuttle to Old Moses Camp, the real journey begins.
Prepare to feel like you’ve stepped onto a movie set. We trek through the Liki North Valley, a landscape so surreal it feels prehistoric. Giant lobelias stand like green guardians, and surreal rock formations rise from the earth. We drop into the belly of Mackinder’s Valley, where the world widens into a massive alpine amphitheater.
As we push higher, the landscape sheds its greenery for raw, rugged beauty. The twin peaks of Batian and Nelion loom ahead; massive, dark, and imposing, daring us to come closer. We pass the mysterious Shipton Caves before arriving at Shipton Camp (4,200m).
Tonight, your ceiling is the Milky Way. Under a canopy of stars so bright they look like you could pluck them from the sky, we rest, refuel, and dream of the summit.
Day 2: The Dawn Assault & The Glory Run
Route: Shipton > Point Lenana > Teleki Valley > Met Station
The wake-up call comes before the birds. Headlamps on, we start the alpine grind in the dark. It is steep. The air is thin. But the camaraderie of the trail pulls you upward. We pass the glassy, silent surfaces of Hausberg and Oblong Tarns, mystical mirrors reflecting the shadows of the peaks.
And then, it happens.
You step onto the summit of Point Lenana just as the sun erupts. The view hits you like a physical force. The Lewis Glacier glows below like a frozen lake. The Simba Col and twin tarns sparkle. If the morning is clear, the majestic silhouette of Kilimanjaro waves from the distance.
You are standing eye-to-level with Batian and Nelion, their icy faces glowing in the morning light. Take a breath. Take a photo. Realize that you did this.
The Descent: The Scenic Victory Lap
What goes up must come down, but we don’t backtrack, we traverse! We descend via the Naromoru Route, plunging into the spectacular Teleki Valley. We walk past the sprawling Lewis Glacier and the dramatic Mackinder’s Caves, tracing a path of history and geology until we reach Met Station.
Your legs might be tired, but your spirit will be soaring.
