Hiking in Nyeri and beyond
Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak, beckons with its snow-capped summits and dramatic landscapes. The Naromoru Route offers a challenging yet rewarding ascent, perfect for experienced hikers seeking an unforgettable adventure. Hike Central – Nyeri is your one-stop shop for conquering this iconic route, ensuring a safe and exhilarating journey to Mackinder’s Camp, nestled amidst the breathtaking scenery of the mountain.
Our adventure starts at the Naromoru Gate, the official entry point on the western side of Mount Kenya National Park. Here, you’ll be greeted by the crisp mountain air and the sight of towering forests cloaking the slopes. After a quick briefing by our guide and permit check by the KWS officers, we’ll embark on a scenic drive towards the Met Station, the road’s end and the true starting point of our hike, but not before we make a stop at the mesmerizing Percival Falls,

As we leave the vehicle behind at the Met Station, a captivating world unfolds. Lush montane forests teeming with life surround you. Towering cedar and bamboo stands create a dappled light effect on the forest floor, while colourful birds flit through the branches, their songs adding to the mystical ambience. Our expert guides will point out various indigenous flora and fauna, enriching your understanding of this unique ecosystem.
The forest gradually gives way to a captivating landscape of open moorland. Here, the true challenge begins. The terrain becomes steeper, demanding a good level of fitness and a determined spirit. But the rewards are truly magnificent. Panoramic vistas unfold before you, revealing rolling hills dotted with wildflowers in vibrant hues. On a clear day, catch a glimpse of the majestic peaks – Batian, Nelion, and Lenana – piercing the azure sky.
One of the most notorious sections of the Naromoru Route is the aptly named Vertical Bog. This perpetually damp and sometimes muddy stretch can test your resolve. However, with the support and encouragement of our experienced guides and the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you, you’ll conquer this section with a sense of accomplishment.
After traversing the captivating moorland, we’ll arrive at Mackinder’s Camp, we will have our snacks here, and soak in the glory of the towering peaks on the mountain. Nestled at an altitude of 4,200 meters, the camp offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the Teleki valley.
We’ll retrace our steps along the Narumoru Route. Descending the mountain offers a different perspective of the landscape, allowing you to appreciate the diverse ecosystems you traversed. Finally, we’ll reach the Met Station, where transportation awaits to take us back to the Naromoru Gate where we will exit the Mt. Kenya National Park and drive back to Nyeri town and Karatina town.
