Mt Satima is the highest peak of the Aberdare Ranges, located in the expansive Aberdare National Park situated in central Kenya. Among the numerous peaks of the Aberdares, Mt Satima stands as tallest at 40001 metres above sea level making the fifth highest point in the country and the third highest mountain.
Think you’ve conquered Mt Satima? Think again.
Most hikers know Ol Donyo Lesatima (Mt Satima) for its famous “Dragon’s Teeth” rock formations. They drive high up to the Shamata gate, take a short trek, snap a photo, and head home. But at Hike Central Nyeri, we know that the real magic of the Aberdares isn’t found on the beaten path, it’s found on the road less traveled.
We are taking you on a 21km expedition to the highest peak of the Aberdare Ranges at 4001 metres ASL, via a little-known route that turns a standard hike into a full-blown wilderness immersion. If you thought you knew Satima, get ready to meet its wilder, greener, and more secretive side.
A Hidden Gem for the True Explorer
This hike is a secret we’ve been dying to share. While the crowds flock to the other trails, our route remains pristine, quiet, and utterly “other-worldly.”
Already been to Satima? If you haven’t done this specific route, you haven’t truly seen the mountain. The standard routes often skip the best part: the dramatic change in vegetation. Our trail offers a complete bio-diversity tour, starting deep in the ancient forests and rising to the alpine heights. It is a “must-try” even for veterans of the Aberdares.
The adventure starts the moment we alight at the secluded junction. Unlike the high-altitude starts that drop you straight into the cold, this route warms you up with a journey through the Old Growth Tropical Rainforest.
The Forest Zone: The first leg is a sensory overload of deep greens. You’ll walk under towering indigenous trees dripping with moss and “old man’s beard” lichen. Keep your voice low and your eyes sharp, this lush corridor is a haven for forest elephants and buffalo.
The Transition: As we gain elevation, the gentle gradient works in your favor. You’ll watch the landscape shift before your eyes. The tall trees give way to dense bamboo zones, which then open up into the vast, rolling Alpine Moorland.
The Summit Push: Emerging from the forest into the moorland feels like stepping onto another planet. The rolling hills stretch endlessly, punctuated by jagged volcanic spires that pierce the skyline.
Why Wandare Route?
- Despite covering 21km, this route is classed as moderate in difficulty. The gradient is forgiving, allowing you to enjoy the distance without the brutal steepness of other Aberdare peaks.
Solitude: You won’t be fighting for space on the trail. It’s often just us, the wind, and the wildlife.
Total Immersion: You get the full Aberdare experience: Rainforest, Bamboo, Moorland, and Summit, all in one day.
Hike Central Nyeri is a hiking, adventure, and tour company located in Nyeri. We don’t just guide you; we host you. We know every turn of this hidden trail and exactly where to stop for the best views. Remember to ask the guide to show the true summit, not the false summit with the summit boards, it has a small sign and the altitude is actually 40001 metres ASL.
Don’t just hike the mountain, experience its secrets.
Join us for this adventure and claim bragging rights on the route that few have discovered.
Caution: High-altitude hikes present unique challenges, including reduced oxygen levels. Acclimate gradually, stay hydrated, and be mindful of symptoms like dizziness or shortness of breath.
