Overview

Welcome to the Sagana Gorges Traverse, a 13km journey that packs more punch per kilometer than any other trail in Central Kenya. Hike Central Nyeri takes you on an odyssey, a full-sensory reset button located right in the heart of Kenya’s protected forests. Whether you are a total beginner looking to break in those new boots or a seasoned trekker craving a scenic traverse, this hike is your perfect match. It’s easy, it’s friendly, and it is absolutely breathtaking.

The Journey Begins: The Scenic Drive

Your adventure starts the moment you hop into our van. As we drive out of Nyeri (or pick you up along the way!), watch the landscape shift from urban bustle to the rolling, green embrace of the countryside. We’ll drop you at the edge of the wilderness, where the air tastes fresher, and the only honking comes from the Hornbills in the trees.

Alighting at the start point, you’ll immediately feel the vibe shift. You are now in the domain of the Kiambicho and Kiamuti forests.

The “Skeleton” Bridge: Dare to Cross?

First things first, we have a river to cross. And we aren’t doing it the boring way.

To enter the trails, we must navigate the legendary Mathioya River suspension footbridge. This isn’t your average concrete overpass. It’s a rustic, swaying marvel of engineering that creaks a little tune with every step you take.

As you walk across, feel the thrill of the sway and look down (if you’re brave!) at the rushing waters below. It’s the ultimate ice-breaker and the perfect spot for that “I’m living my best life” selfie. Don’t worry, it’s safe, but the adrenaline? That’s 100% real.

Hill #1: Conquering Kiambicho Hill

Once we cross the river, we dive into the Kiambicho Forest, a stunning patch of old-growth tropical rainforest. The canopy here is thick and ancient, offering cool shade as we ascend our first peak: Kiambicho Hill.

The climb is gentle and beginner-friendly, winding through indigenous trees that whisper stories of the past. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse fauna. When we hit the summit, prepare to have your breath taken away, not by the climb, but by the view. On a clear day, the Mwea Plains stretch out like a golden carpet, and the mighty Mt. Kenya tips its snowy cap in the distance.

Into the Belly of the Earth: The Sagana Gorges

What goes up must come down, and our descent takes us into the magical Sagana Gorges. This is the heart of the hike. The terrain shifts from forest hills to rocky, dramatic gorges carved by heavy floods. Here, we’ll trek in the labyrinth of the gorge, and exploring hidden nooks. It’s raw, wild, and incredibly photogenic.

Hill #2: The Final Traverse to Kiamuti Hill

Just when you think it can’t get better, we begin our traverse to the second twin: Kiamuti Hill. This section is a true traverse, a delightful walk across the gorges connecting the two hills. The path here is open and breezy, giving you 360-degree views of the surrounding forests. Completing the 13km loop feels like a victory lap. You’ve conquered two hills, crossed a swaying bridge, and explored deep gorges!

What to Bring

Essentials:

  • National ID or Passport: A valid national ID or passport is required for entry into Kiamuti and Kiambicho Forest. Make sure it's readily accessible in your daypack for park rangers to check upon arrival.
  • Quick-dry clothing: Opt for moisture-wicking shirts, pants, and shorts that will dry quickly if you get caught in a sudden shower or sweat heavily during the hike. This will keep you comfortable and prevent chills, especially on the way back down. e.g. football jersey, cargo pants, polyester clothes
  • Hiking boots: Sturdy, waterproof boots with good ankle support are crucial for navigating the sometimes muddy and uneven terrain.
  • Daypack: A comfortable backpack, ideally around 20-30 liters, will carry your essentials while leaving your hands free.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the hike with at least 2 liters of water. Consider a water bottle to minimize plastic waste. Single use plastic containers are prohibited in the park.
  • Snacks and lunch: Pack enough energy-boosting snacks like nuts, granola bars, and fruits, along with a filling lunch to replenish your reserves.
  • Rain gear: The weather on the Aberdares can be unpredictable, so pack a rain jacket and pants to be prepared for sudden showers.

Sun protection:

  • Sunscreen: Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen generously to exposed skin, reapplying every 2 hours, especially after sweating or swimming.
  • Sunglasses: A good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting off the water and foliage.
  • Hat: A wide-brimmed hat will shield your face and neck from the sun's rays.

Comfort and convenience:

  • Hiking poles: These can provide extra stability and support on the sometimes steep sections of the trail.
  • First-aid kit: The guide will be equipped with a first aid kit. Reach out to him/her when you need assistance.
  • Insect repellent: Apply insect repellent to keep pesky mosquitoes and other bugs at bay.
  • Camera: Capture the breathtaking beauty of Ford Falls and the surrounding scenery with a camera or phone. Professional photography will also be available.
  • Cash: While not always necessary, carrying some cash can be handy for buying snacks or drinks from local vendors near the park entrance.

Optional items:

  • Dry bag: Protect your valuables like your phone and camera from getting wet with a dry bag.
  • Binoculars: Get a closer look at the diverse birdlife and other wildlife in the area with a pair of binoculars.
  • Change of clothes: A extra set of clothes to change into after the hike (sometimes, the good hiking gear also fails, and unexpected rain may drench you).

How to Prepare for this Hike

Preparation:

    • Distance and Difficulty: The hike is a traverse of a total distance of 12km, rated as easy with an option to climb one or two hills.
    • Physical Fitness: Kiamuti and Kiambicho hills are not tough hills to climb, however, it is always advised to include cardio exercises such as running, cycling, and swimming in your routine.

    • Stretch and Warm Up: Before setting off, perform some light stretches and warm-up exercises to prevent injuries.

    • Check the Weather: Check the weather forecast before your hike and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.

    • Strenuous Exercises: Refrain from strenuous exercises for days prior to the day of the hike.

    • Foot Care: Cut your toenails short for comfort in the boots and to avoid injuries.

    • Hydration: Hydrate adequately for 7 days prior to the hike.
