Welcome to the Sagana Gorges Traverse, a 13km journey that packs more punch per kilometer than any other trail in Central Kenya. Hike Central Nyeri takes you on an odyssey, a full-sensory reset button located right in the heart of Kenya’s protected forests. Whether you are a total beginner looking to break in those new boots or a seasoned trekker craving a scenic traverse, this hike is your perfect match. It’s easy, it’s friendly, and it is absolutely breathtaking.
The Journey Begins: The Scenic Drive
Your adventure starts the moment you hop into our van. As we drive out of Nyeri (or pick you up along the way!), watch the landscape shift from urban bustle to the rolling, green embrace of the countryside. We’ll drop you at the edge of the wilderness, where the air tastes fresher, and the only honking comes from the Hornbills in the trees.
Alighting at the start point, you’ll immediately feel the vibe shift. You are now in the domain of the Kiambicho and Kiamuti forests.
The “Skeleton” Bridge: Dare to Cross?
First things first, we have a river to cross. And we aren’t doing it the boring way.
To enter the trails, we must navigate the legendary Mathioya River suspension footbridge. This isn’t your average concrete overpass. It’s a rustic, swaying marvel of engineering that creaks a little tune with every step you take.
As you walk across, feel the thrill of the sway and look down (if you’re brave!) at the rushing waters below. It’s the ultimate ice-breaker and the perfect spot for that “I’m living my best life” selfie. Don’t worry, it’s safe, but the adrenaline? That’s 100% real.
Hill #1: Conquering Kiambicho Hill
Once we cross the river, we dive into the Kiambicho Forest, a stunning patch of old-growth tropical rainforest. The canopy here is thick and ancient, offering cool shade as we ascend our first peak: Kiambicho Hill.
The climb is gentle and beginner-friendly, winding through indigenous trees that whisper stories of the past. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse fauna. When we hit the summit, prepare to have your breath taken away, not by the climb, but by the view. On a clear day, the Mwea Plains stretch out like a golden carpet, and the mighty Mt. Kenya tips its snowy cap in the distance.
Into the Belly of the Earth: The Sagana Gorges
What goes up must come down, and our descent takes us into the magical Sagana Gorges. This is the heart of the hike. The terrain shifts from forest hills to rocky, dramatic gorges carved by heavy floods. Here, we’ll trek in the labyrinth of the gorge, and exploring hidden nooks. It’s raw, wild, and incredibly photogenic.
Hill #2: The Final Traverse to Kiamuti Hill
Just when you think it can’t get better, we begin our traverse to the second twin: Kiamuti Hill. This section is a true traverse, a delightful walk across the gorges connecting the two hills. The path here is open and breezy, giving you 360-degree views of the surrounding forests. Completing the 13km loop feels like a victory lap. You’ve conquered two hills, crossed a swaying bridge, and explored deep gorges!
